Intro to Developmental Psychology
The use of modern day psychology has evoked many questions as to why people are the way they are. Compared to other subjects, it is a relatively new field only going back to the 19th century. This means there are constantly breakthroughs and advances being made. There are many different subcategories that psychologists fall into, but the one I'm interested in focuses on how humans grow and adapt as they age. Developmental psychologists dive deeper into how childhood experiences can shape who a person becomes. I plan on investigating the influence parents have on their children's development. John Piaget was a well acknowledged psychologist in the early 20th century, who developed a theory that there were four crucial stages in a child's development. He named them as sensorimotor, pre-operational, concrete operational, and formal operational. As children age and progress through these steps, they are forming their own version of morality. For instance if a child does something wrong, their parents might punish them to discourage that behavior. This punishment or lack of punishment fluctuates across parents and has lasting effects on how that child establishes right from wrong. I want to learn how different styles of parenting affect kids behavior and emotions. Listed below are some questions that I plan on further researching. I encourage you to follow along with my posts to discover more about these topics. Let me know if there are any other questions you have and I will try my best to look into them.
